阿修羅(ashura)

■The Meaning of “阿修羅(ashura)”
A symbol of fierce fighting spirit, inner conflict, and burning passion.
It often represents an “internal struggle where good and evil intermingle.”
In modern usage, it frequently carries nuances like:
“a person burning with fighting spirit,”
“the image of someone continuing to fight despite suffering,”
or “intense passion.”

■The Origin of “阿修羅(ashura)”
Ashura originates from the Indian mythological Asura,
originally a powerful benevolent deity, but later depicted as a fierce demon god
who fought against Indra.
When incorporated into Buddhism,
it came to signify:
・A guardian deity of the Dharma (one of the Eight Divisions)
・The realm of strife and jealousy, the “Asura Realm”
・A symbol of the perpetually battling mind
Thus, 阿修羅(ashura) became established as a term representing intense emotions, inner conflict, and fighting spirit.
However, in modern times, it is often used in a positive sense, symbolizing “burning passion” or “unbreakable will.”
